A new Venom rumor reveals how Cletus Kasady aka Carnage will fit into Sony Pictures’ superhero film – and suggests Woody Harrelson will portray the role in setup for a sequel. Last year, Sony surprised many by announcing a Venom movie starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock from director Ruben Fleischer was in the works. The studio had previously hired screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg to pen the script for the R-rated project, and Venom started filming late in 2017.
Just this week, Sony unveiled the first teaser trailer for Venom, which arrived shortly after Hardy announced the film had wrapped principal photography. Throughout production on Venom, fans were treated to set photos of various cast members, including Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Riz Ahmed as Dr. Carlton Drake, Scott Haze as Roland Treece, and Jenny Slate as Dora Skirth. However, what we didn’t know about Venom is how Carnage will factor in, since the Marvel supervillain was confirmed to appear in the film but little had been announced officially. Now, a new rumor reveals how Carnage will appear, and hints at who may play Cletus Kasady.
That Hashtag Show is reporting that Carnage won’t actually be a part of the main story of the film, which will deal with the Life Foundation and multiple symbiotes. Instead, Venom will feature Eddie Brock in San Quentin State Prison near the end of the film, possibly in a post-credits scene, where he will be introduced to Kasady by Dr. Ashley Kafka. According to THS’s source, a piece of Brock’s symbiote will break off and make its way toward Kasady before the screen cuts to black. Essentially, the scene sets up Carnage to be a major antagonist in a Venom sequel. Further, THS speculates that since Harrelson, who was cast in Venom as a “henchman,” wasn’t spotted in any set photos during production, he’s the most likely candidate to portray Cletus Kasady.
As THS points out, this potential origin for Carnage in Venom is reminiscent of how Cletus Kasady was infected by a symbiote in the comics. In Amazing Spider-Man #344, Brock escapes the Rikers Island prison cell he shared with serial killer Cletus Kasady. During the breakout, an offspring from Brock’s symbiote breaks off and infects Kasady, who then becomes Carnage. Unlike Brock, Kasady is completely overtaken by the symbiote, which amplifies the serial killer’s psychotic nature, turning Carnage into the Marvel supervillain fans know today.
If this Venom rumor turns out to be true, fans should temper their expectations for Carnage. Initial reports on Carnage appearing in the film were slim, only indicating he’d show up, not necessarily that he would be the main villain. From what we’ve seen of Venom in the first teaser trailer, it appears Brock will be plenty busy dealing with the Life Foundation and their research into the alien symbiotes. So, if that is the main conflict at the center of Venom, it would make sense for the film to save Cletus Kasady/Carnage for the very end, or a post-credits scene, setting up a sequel.
With that said, this Carnage rumor has not yet been confirmed to be true. Fans will learn more about Venom once the film’s October release date gets closer. Until then, fans can pore over the teaser trailer and any other marketing materials that come our way as Sony builds hype for Venom.
