Simon Pegg has revealed a potential story idea for a Hot Fuzz sequel. While Pegg has found big success in the last 12 years as a vital supporting player in both the Mission: Impossible and Star Trek movie franchises, the actor-writer and his frequent collaborator, Nick Frost, have also made names for themselves – thanks to 2004 zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead, the horror-tinged 2007 buddy cop movie send-up Hot Fuzz, and the 2013 sci-fi apocalyptic comedy The World’s End.
Dubbed the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, since the films are connected by the consumption of the Italian ice cream brand in each of them, none of Pegg and Frost’s big screen adventures have spawned a sequel as of yet. Instead, the two are at work on such projects as the upcoming horror comedy Slaughterhouse Rulez, set for a September release in the UK, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking for more of any of the films in the Cornetto Trilogy.
In a new interview for Pegg’s latest film, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, on Larry King Now, a viewer posted a question on King’s blog asking Pegg, if he could make a sequel to Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, or The World’s End, which one would it be? Sensing that the first and last options had some limitations, Pegg without hesitation says it would be the middle choice, where he played to obsessive, detail-oriented police Officer Nicholas Angel. He says:
Naturally, the success of Pegg, Frost, and the Cornetto Trilogy’s co-writer and director, Edgar Wright, has provided plenty of opportunities for the trio over the past dozen years, so don’t expect the three to reunite to do a Hot Fuzz sequel anytime soon. If their trilogy proved anything, it demonstrated how genre movies could be made in original and exciting ways. So instead of trying to repeat the new formulas they’ve already concocted and mastered, why not continue breaking the rules with other types of movies?
“I think the only one of those films that could possible get a sequel is Hot Fuzz, just because that could a continuing, sort-of action-style, cop thing … because Hot Fuzz was about my character going to the countryside to be a cop in a small town. It would have to be about Nicholas Angel taking Frost’s character, Danny, to the big city. It would have to be like Crocodile Dundee 2 was. That sort of reversal of plot.”
That’s not to say a Hot Fuzz sequel wouldn’t be extremely entertaining. The ensemble cast was stellar, the plot about the small town cult was ingenious, the action was exciting, and the horror/gore in the film was an absolute hoot. If it does happen, though, a Hot Fuzz sequel would absolutely require the return of Timothy Dalton’s devilishly funny character, Simon Skinner – that is if he can get that mini church steeple extracted from his chin. It’s the painfully funniest scene in Hot Fuzz that makes audiences laugh so much it hurts.
