Horror movie icon and A Nightmare on Elm Street star Robert Englund is getting his very own documentary. Englund’s acting career began in 1974 when he appeared in the movie Buster and Billie as the character Whitey. Englund started to get more attention when he joined V as the character Willie, but the biggest role of his career came in 1984 when he played Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Englund is considered an icon when it comes to horror movies because of his role as the man with knives for fingers. Englund has played Freddy in a total of eight A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and even had his own TV show back in the late ’80s called Freddy’s Nightmares. His famous character most recently appeared on an episode of The Goldbergs last year for the Halloween special. Over the years, Englund appeared in a number of other horror movies, including titles like The Phantom of the Opera, 2001 Maniacs, and Night Terrors. Now, a new documentary is coming out about Englund’s extensive career.
First reported by Bloody Disgusting, a new documentary is being created about Englund from the companies that made other horror documentaries such as Pennywise: The Story of IT and You’re so Cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night. Cult Screenings UK LTD and Deadmouse Productions are working on the documentary called Icon: The Robert Englund Story, which will explore Englund’s early acting career, his rise as a horror icon, and his immense success as a character actor. The documentary is said to have interviews from Englund’s co-workers, friends, and the horror icon himself. Icon: The Robert Englund Story will be fan-funded through an Indiegogo campaign, which will run for the month of June. Two teaser trailers, as well as the first poster for the documentary, can be seen below:
Englund turns 72 next week, but the actor shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Englund currently has two upcoming films he is attached to: Harvest Moon and Abruptio. Englund will also host a new series on the Travel Channel called Shadows of History. The actor had previously stated that he is too old to reprise the role of Freddy, but last year he revealed that he would be up for playing Freddy in one last movie. No news has come about a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie starring Englund, or even the rumored A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, but Englund no doubt sparked a bit of hope in the hearts of horror fans.
Whether Englund plays Freddy again or soon retires from acting completely, he will no doubt live on forever in the horror community as an icon. His role in A Nightmare on Elm Street was enough to earn him that title, but his work on over 160 movies and TV shows throughout his career also certainly helped. Icon: The Robert Englund Story might be fan-funded, but with how loyal the horror fan base is surrounding A Nightmare on Elm Street, the project shouldn’t have any problems getting funds for a 2020 release date.
