Netflix enlists Hobbs & Shaw writer Drew Pearce to direct the thriller Quartermaster. In recent years, Pearce wrote the screenplay for Iron Man 3, and created the story for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Last year, the Scottish/British filmmaker released his directorial debut, Hotel Artemis.
In 2007, Pearce created a sitcom about unsuccessful superheroes called No Heroics. ABC later ordered a pilot but declined to pick up the series. By 2010, Pearce was set to adapt Marvel Comics’ Runaways, however the project was shelved, and he moved onto Iron Man 3. Since then, Pearce has been attached to numerous projects, many of which didn’t pan out. For the aforementioned Hotel Artemis, Pearce wrote the screenplay and enlisted veteran performers like Jodie Foster, Jeff Goldblum, and Sterling K. Brown for the dystopian thriller, along with rock star composer Cliff Martinez (Too Old to Die Young) for the score. Produced for $15 million, Hotel Artemis was a box office failure by earning a mere $12 million, though critic reviews weren’t necessarily harsh, as the film currently holds a 57 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
Per Variety, Pearce will write and direct Quartermaster for Netflix. The filmmaker reportedly pitched the concept himself and executives immediately signed off. At this point, the plot details haven’t been revealed, aside from the fact that Quartermaster will be a “high-concept thriller.” The film will be produced by Marc Platt, who previously collaborated with Pearce for Hotel Artemis. In 2016, Platt received an Oscar nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year (Bridge of Spies), which he shared with Steven Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger. The following year, Platt received another Oscar nod for La La Land, in collaboration with Fred Berger and Jordan Horowitz.
As for Pearce, his new film, Hobbs & Shaw, will be released on August 2. Directed by David Leitch, the buddy cop action film is a spinoff from the Fast and Furious franchise, with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, respectively. The film is based on characters created by Gary Scott Thompson, and Pearce co-wrote the script with Chris Morgan, who has written every franchise installment since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Based on Pearce’s resume, he’s becoming a master of the blockbuster action film genre. But fans may be curious if Quartermaster will include many of the same genre themes, or if Pearce will try something entirely new. In 2019, Netflix released numerous thrillers, however it seems that Quartermaster won’t be anything like See You Yesterday, Triple Frontier, or The Perfection. It will be interesting to see if Pearce rounds up another all-star cast full of icons and up-and-comers for Quartermaster.
