Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is the highly anticipated first new spinoff film from the Fast & Furious franchise, after Universal Pictures attempted a previous spinoff movie years ago with Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift - and it’s slated to release in theaters on August 2, 2019.

This time, Hobbs & Shaw is meant to kickstart something new for the long-running series, and it stars Dwayne Johnson as former government agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as mercenary turned (maybe) good guy Deckard Shaw. Johnson joined the franchise in 2011’s Fast Five and quickly became a fan-favorite cast member, which is no surprise given his star-power as well as his character’s relationship with the rest of the team. Statham, on the other hand, first appeared as the villain in Furious 7, but has since warmed up to being on the good side of things.

However, off-screen it was a different story. Behind the scenes, Johnson was apparently involved in a feud with franchise star Vin Diesel at one point. This, combined with the chemistry displayed by Johnson and Statham in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious spurred the idea for the spinoff film, one that could very well lead to even more spinoffs down the line.

Hobbs & Shaw Is The First Fast & Furious Spinoff (Of Many)

Hobbs & Shaw isn’t the only spinoff movie coming out of the Fast & Furious universe. The Fate of the Furious marked a turning point when it hit theaters in 2017; it was the first main installment not to feature Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner - and its success, as well as the chemistry between the new pair-ups, proved that the franchise could survive without its main leads in each film. And so, Hobbs & Shaw marks the first installment in that new initiative to expand the Fast & Furious franchise beyond the core team.

Diesel recently announced that three new spinoffs are in the works with Universal. This includes a “female protagonist driven spinoff”. On Instagram, Diesel welcomed writers Nicole Perlman (Captain Marvel), Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is A Loser), and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider) to the Fast Family, as they’re all three writing a new Fast & Furious spinoff movie, which means the movie is in the very early stages of development. There is no news yet regarding the other two spinoffs and what they could be about, but if everything goes according to plan, then there should be a new Fast & Furious movie every year instead of every other year.

At the moment, there are two main franchise films still to come. Fast & Furious 9 is set to be released in April 2020, and reportedly the final film in the franchise will be Fast & Furious 10, which is supposed to release in 2021. With the female-led Fast & Furious spinoff now in development, that movie could then hit theaters sometime in 2022. Unless, of course, Fast & Furious 10 is pushed back a year to make room for that movie.

Hobbs & Shaw Cast Reunites Dwayne Johnson & Jason Statham

While Luke Hobbs first appeared in Fast Five, his counterpart Shaw made his (shocking) appearance in the mid-credits scene for Fast and Furious 6. It was revealed that Deckard Shaw was the one who killed Han (Sung Kang) in Tokyo, setting up Shaw as the villain of Furious 7.  Johnson and Statham faced off for the first time in Furious 7 when Hobbs catches Shaw breaking into his office. The crew spends most of the movie on a globe-trotting mission trying to capture Shaw, which they finally do in Los Angeles. Furious 7 ends with Shaw taken into custody by Hobbs and detained in a secret CIA prison.

However, in The Fate of the Furious (after an intense prison breakout), Shaw switches sides. He teams up with Hobbs after Dominic (Diesel) goes rogue. The two work with rest of the team to bring back Dom, save his son, and take down the Cipher (Charlize Theron). It is this relationship that will continue into the spinoff film, Hobbs & Shaw, and perhaps other additions of the Fast & Furious franchise. But no matter who he works for now, Shaw still has Han’s death to answer for. Furthermore, Hobbs & Shaw is going to introduce a number of other actors and actresses into the ongoing franchise - and they could potentially reappear in other installments as well.

Fast & Furious 9 Was Delayed For Hobbs & Shaw

Fast & Furious 9 is expected to start production in April of this year. Fast & Furious 9 was supposed to release in 2019 but was pushed back to make room for Hobbs & Shaw, which became the impetus of yet another feud in the Fast Family. For several months, Johnson and Tyrese Gibson feuded on social media over the fact that Hobbs & Shaw was taking priority over Fast & Furious 9. While everything ended up settling down, the fact that one movie replaced another remained.

Fast & Furious 9 now has a release date of April 10, 2020. At first, the plan was to shoot both Fast & Furious 9 and 10 back to back, but that no longer appears to be the case. At least, not that the studio has revealed. Director Justin Lin is returning to helm Fast & Furious 9 after having stepped away from the franchise a few years ago - Lin directed Tokyo Drift as well as Fast & Furious 4, 5, and 6 - with new writer Daniel Casey on board. Moreover, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and Gibson are set to reprise their roles alongside Diesel. However, Johnson won’t appear in Fast & Furious 9, but it’s unclear if he’ll return for the last installment in the franchise. There’s also no word on Statham.

What We Know About Hobbs & Shaw’s Story

While the Fast & Furious films might appear on the outside to be about cool cars and crazy, logic-defying stunts, what’s really at the core is the notion of family. And it seems like this will carry over to Hobbs & Shaw as well. While the details of the film are slim, we know it will introduce Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw, Deckard’s sister and MI6 agent. She joins the growing Shaw family which already features Owen (Luke Evans), Deckard, and matriarch Magdalene (Helen Mirren). She’s not the only family member to appear in the film either.

WWE star Roman Reigns will appear as Hobbs’ brother along with Josh Mauga, John Tui, and Cliff Curtis. The Hobbs brothers own a vintage car shop in Western Samoa. Rounding out the family affair will be Hobbs’ daughter, who has been recast from the original Fast & Furious films. So, it very much seems like a family affair this time around.

Hobbs and Shaw will be facing off against Brixton (Idris Elba), the “Baddest Bad Guy the Fast & Furious franchise has ever had,” according to Johnson, who has been hyping up the showdown on social media for a long time now. There is also the mysterious Madam M (Eiza Gonzalez), who could be friend or foe, to contend with as well. Either way, these guys are going to have their hands full. No matter what the story might be, Hobbs & Shaw is sure to feature outrageous action, well-choreographed fight scenes, a bit of humor, and a lot of fast cars.
